Choir Stall Carvings

Carved images often embellished choir stalls in medieval churches. The subjects are carved on wooden panels, arm-rests, hand rests, and on brackets beneath the choir stall seats. The carvings are abundant and often involve fantastic figures of animals or grotesque devils.

The choir stalls at St. Margaret’s are relatively modern but they take up this tradition. Each image allows for an expression of the craftsman’s art. We see models of spiritual aspirations with angelic forms at prayer or involved in worship. We also see fabulous beasts, also winged, that perhaps present the devilish temptations drawing us away from God.

Many a chorister has sounded “angelic” and then talked or played quiet games during a dull sermon. The carvings help reflect the different sides of our life!
